In this month’s ‘Driving Mobility Centre of the Month’ we meet the team at The Northern Ireland Mobility Centre (NIMC)
The Northern Ireland Mobility Centre (NIMC) in Belfast is committed to promoting the independence of people by offering advice and assessments on aspects of personal mobility. It currently has a fleet of adapted vehicles offering lessons throughout most major towns in Northern Ireland and can also assist with preparing for the theory test.
NIMC has satellite centres in:
Ballymena
Carrickfergus
Coleraine
Downpatrick
Dungannon
Enniskillen
Londonderry
Newry
Omagh
The NIMC unit is based within Disability Action in Belfast and the team consists of a manager, part-time administrator, three part-time assessors and two Approved driving instructors (ADIs).
All the staff have been brilliant at working together to adapt the service to meet the constant changes from the government in relation to Covid-19 and are still delivering a professional and friendly service.
This is what one of their clients had to say post assessment:
“I would like to pass on my heartfelt thanks to you and the Mobility Team for all your help to getting my driving license back. I received my license today, and I’m “eternally grateful” to you and your team 😊”
Towards the end of 2021 NIMC completed their Driving Mobility accreditation and were delighted to be awarded Accredited Associate Member status for another year.
Looking to the future, the NIMC team are working together with the Driving Mobility CEO, Edward Trewhella, to develop their strategic plan, Edward wrote “We are delighted to have been invited to contribute to the strategic plan being developed for NIMC by their parent charity Disability Action. As well as continuing to build on their unique position across the island of Ireland by developing as a hub for best practice in driving independence for disabled people, they want to further strengthen their partnership working with us to meet the full accreditation requirements. This includes committing to a scoping exercise to develop a Clinician Role for the Mobility Centre which has huge potential for meeting their objectives and the development of mental health support for their customers”.As the country emerges from Covid, NIMC see increased partnership-working with their colleagues in the field as the way forward for them, and for the benefit of their clients.
